SF Transit Riders needs U
Let’s stand UNITED
for public transit!
SFTR needs U. For the past 15 years, our organization has worked to unite riders across San Francisco, building the city’s only member-led, grassroots advocate for safe, equitable, and growing transportation. And our work isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
In 2026, we will provide our members with up-to-date news and advocacy opportunities surrounding transit funding, services, and voting, all while assembling a community with the shared goal of making public transportation even better than it is now.
Let’s stand united, build people power, and fight for public transit that serves ALL riders in San Francisco.
Please consider donating to San Francisco Transit Riders for our End-of-Year campaign from now until January 9, 2026, so that we can continue to advocate for the needs of transit riders in local and regional investments.

Our 2025 Achievements
Power Building
Established the Muni Now, Muni Forever Campaign, mobilizing hundreds of riders to advocate for public transit
The Transit Justice Coalition, which includes San Francisco Transit Riders and our community partners, formed the Muni Now, Muni Forever campaign to demand the City find a solution to the SFMTA’s funding deficit, and to oppose transit service cuts. As part of this campaign, we reminded Mayor Lurie to prioritize transit, distributed flyers citywide to prevent service cuts, and encouraged riders to speak up during public comment at SFMTA board meetings.
We also co-hosted two rallies at San Francisco City Hall in response to the SFMTA’s service cuts and Governor Newsom’s funding cuts, which were attended by SF district supervisors and a combined 500+ riders.
Directly impacted public transit through the Muni Now, Muni Forever Campaign
SFTR and our members pushed the needle, securing temporary funding to push the transit funding deficit another year, and stopped the suspension of Muni lines during the fight against service cuts.
Because of our advocacy, we were able to push the SFMTA to halve the amount of budget cuts coming directly from cuts to transit service, preserving 2% of systemwide service that would have otherwise been lost.
Over the summer, we hosted the Muni Forever Summit, laying the foundation for a citywide transit vision and bolstering future funding measures.
Built rider power through education, research, and outreach.
We began voter education ahead of next year’s election. We hope to continue these efforts into 2026, ensuring all of our members are informed and prepared to vote.
We worked with the Bay Area Air District to survey equity priority communities in the Excelsior neighborhood and compiled community members’ top transit needs and priorities. This research will be used to advocate for future public transit improvements.
We continued our work with the Safe Routes to School program, spreading awareness of Free Muni for Youth to hundreds of San Franciscans. Inspired by Transit Month, we also hosted the first Ride Muni to School Week.
We partnered with Walk SF and SF Bike to build community-centered advocacy to advance street safety and transportation policies in the Bayview and Western Addition.
Community Building
Continued to cultivate Transit Month as the Bay Area’s September tradition
This year’s Transit Month consisted of a total of 87 transit-themed events spread across all 9 Bay Area counties, from rallies to ridealongs, speedruns, socials, and more. Our Ride Contest attracted three times as many contestants as in 2024, totaling 985 participants and 198,331 miles traveled on Bay Area transit. In 2025, SFTR and our partners at Seamless Bay Area began to collaborate with SoCal Transit Month to extend the celebration throughout California.
Restructured our membership and created more opportunities for support and engagement
After feedback from our Membership Meeting in April, the SFTR staff introduced the quarterly All Members Assembly meetings. These meetings are a space for members to discuss local and regional transit updates, organizational updates, and our member-led projects.
We grew our membership dramatically, cultivating our community of riders so we can unite and advocate for transit rider needs as one voice.
Celebrated our 15th anniversary as an organization
2025 marks San Francisco Transit Riders’ 15th anniversary. We are so grateful for all of the SFTR members, advocates, transit leaders, and community partners who have supported our work throughout the years. We will continue to grow and to push for transit rider needs and investments.
Our 2026 Goals
In 2026, we will continue to build power within our community of riders. We plan to expand on our partnerships with community-based organizations, students, seniors, and all riders across the city, providing SFTR members with increased opportunities for engagement and leadership.
We will advocate for secure, equitable, and permanent funding for Bay Area transit agencies by educating voters to ensure the passage of sustainable Muni funding. By investing in public transit, we invest in our communities, the economy, and a clean environment.
Please support our work in 2026 by donating here!
You can still help us meet our goal and support our work for 2026, even if you aren’t available to come to our gala. Please consider donating to San Francisco Transit Riders for our End-of-Year campaign from now until January 9, 2026, so that we can continue to advocate for the needs of transit riders in local and regional investments.
Hear from our community partners

“Senior and Disability Action and San Francisco Transit Riders have a long history of working together on transit issues, dating as far back to when the word Union was a part of the SFTR name. SFTR’s current support of our Gimme Shelter! campaign and their work on completely Restoring Muni services are just a couple examples of their commitment to make sure that all SF Transit Riders are not just here for the ride, they’re here to create their ride.”
-Pi Ra, Senior & Disability Action

“SFTR has been instrumental in making sure transit riders are heard when important decisions about transit priority improvements like bus lanes are being made.”
-Liz Brisson, proud SFTR member and SFMTA Major Corridors Planning Manager
SF Transit Riders in the Media
