SUMMARY:Transit Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:See you at the movies! Join us for our final event of Membership Month 2024 where we’ll be coming together to watch the documentary “Taken for a Ride\,” and other transit-focused videos. After the movie\, we encourage you to join a discussion about the film\, our thoughts\, and what transit means to each of us. \nAbout “Taken to Ride” \nBefore freeways\, traffic congestion and air pollution\, public transportation was a vital part of the American landscape. Jim Klein and Martha Olson weave investigative journalism\, urban history and social commentary to uncover General Motors’ role in dismantling street car transportation in the 1930’s\, and in catapulting the automobile to the center of our national culture.

SUMMARY:Petition to help save & expand transit in the Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Transit in the Peninsula is in a dire state! For the region to meet its climate\, economic growth\, affordability\, air quality\, public health\, and justice goals we need drastically improved transit service. We have a chance to pass a bill that sets the stage for a major increase in transit funding to the Peninsula\, so come help educate and engage voters to speak out in favor of funding transit. \nThe more San Mateo County voters sign on to the petition telling their State representatives and transit boards to support transit funding\, the better chance we have of getting the funds our region needs. Help us get SB1031\, the “Connect Bay Area Act” bill passed into law! \nEvent details: \nMeet out front of the Redwood City Caltrain Station at 1pm on Saturday April 13th to get trained up\, partnered with a petitioning buddy and a stack of petitioning flyers. We will then go out into the neighborhoods to pass out flyers\, educate people about transit\, and get folks to sign the petition. \nAfterwards\, volunteers are invited to join a no-host outdoor happy hour at City Pub on Broadway at 3pm to de-brief and celebrate a job well done. \nIt can get hot so we recommend bring sunblock\, water\, a hat and a positive attitude.

SUMMARY:Speak Up at MTC to Support a Regional Transit Measure!
DESCRIPTION:Transit providers in the Bay Area have been hit hard by the pandemic and current funding levels are not sufficient\, so the Voices for Public Transportation Coalition has been working tirelessly to pass a funding measure that would transform the Bay Area transportation system into one that is more stable\, equitable\, and user-friendly. SB 1031 (Wahab\, Wiener) the authorizing legislation for this measure is going through the legislature this year with a focus on sustaining and improving transit service\, advancing transit transformation through customer and service improvements\, and with a minimum set-aside of $750 million a year. Now is the time to act\, on April 12th The Metropolitan Transportation Commission will be having a legislative committee meeting on SB 1031\, show your support by making a comment at this meeting. \nThe Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s Legislative Committee will discuss SB 1031 on Friday\, April 12th. This MTC sponsored bill in its current form is great but we need it to go further. We must limit the expansion of highways\, set aside a minimum of $750 million or 70 percent of revenues\, and ensure that it is funded through progressive revenue mechanisms. \nCan you give a brief public comment at the meeting to voice your support for SB 1031 and tell the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to prioritize transit! \nTo receive a text message notification when the the item is up\, please enter your cellphone number.

SUMMARY:Release of Transit Justice Coalition Policy Report
DESCRIPTION:Let’s get on board for Transit Equity Day! This national day of organizing and mobilization brings together unions\, transit rider organizers\, and climate and environmental justice groups to act as one voice around February 4\, Rosa Park’s birthday\, and to declare transit equity as a civil right. \nThis year\, we are joining the Labor Network for Sustainability and the National Campaign for Transit Justice to drive an urgent narrative: Our public transportation systems should be measured by how well they service riders.\n \nOver the course of 2023\, San Francisco Transit Riders (SFTR) has worked with partners and advocates all across the city to create a report highlighting the changes needed to transform San Francisco’s transit network into the equitable and rider-focused system that San Franciscans want and deserve. \nThrough the SFTR-led Transit Justice Coalition\, we conducted months of outreach and collaboration with organizations comprising a vast array of expertise\, including transportation\, housing\, labor\, climate\, affordability\, accessibility\, and neighborhood needs. Through that outreach we identified several of the changes needed to transform our transit network into a more equitable and rider-focused system. The report will lift some of those necessary changes\, as well as present solutions as a vision for what a fully-funded and equity-focused transit system could look like. \nSign up to receive updates on the report\, which we plan to release on February 4th in honor of Transit Equity Day. \n[UPDATE] Click here to read the full report: https://sftransitriders.org/transit-justice-coalition/

SUMMARY:End-of-the-Year Giving Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Supporting SFTR ensures that riders\, particularly those living in neighborhoods that have often been excluded from transit planning and investment\, will be front and center in the fight to fund Muni\, restore service and create a more equitable\, sustainable San Francisco. \nGive today to make sure all riders are heard\, and crucial transit funding is won\, in 2024. \nSFTR will continue to engage with riders across the city to ensure riders are front and center when it comes to transit decision-making in a way that builds trust and accountability for SFMTA and other government entities. In addition\, our transit planning\, funding and regional policy working groups ensure our actions center the needs of riders. This year\, we released our Strategic Plan\, setting the path and direction for our work through 2025.

SUMMARY:San Jose Transit Happy Hour: Transit Stops Drunk Driving
DESCRIPTION:Come join fellow transit supporters in Santa Clara county for a drink and discussion of how transit can reduce drunk driving\, save lives\, and allow people to get out into their communities to more safely enjoy themselves.  \nEach year\, tens of thousands of people across Santa Clara County drive drunk\, risking their lives and posing a major risk to everyone in the community. Nearly 100\,000 Californians are arrested each year for drunk driving\, others are hit with massive fines.
